Hindu Dharma - 214 (Significance of Yajna-1)

To know the significance of Kalpa, one must know the significance of Yajna. Yajna is a wonderful process which belongs only to Sanatana dharma.  The word yagna is derived from the Sanskrit root yaj, meaning to give (dãn), to unify (sangatikaran) and to perform Devapujã. DEVAPUUJAA (regard for the forces of nature and respect for elderly persons), SAMGATI KARANA (co-ordination of resources at one's disposal, and DAANA (recycling of benefits accuring from DEVAPUUJAA and SAMGATI KARANA for the welfare of society (are the basics of “VEDIC ‘YAJNA".)  A yagna is one of the oldest rituals in Sanãtan Dharma, to propitiate the deities.  Yagna encompasses the attributes of welcoming (satkãr), altruism (upkãr) and unity (sangathan). Its foremost meaning is “to give.”  Yagna as a rite is defined as offering oblations in the name of devas – devatoddeshena havistyãgah – while specific mantras are being chanted. The Jaiminiya sutra (4.2.27) explains that it is an act of giving up of articles to please the devas. The important rite in a yagna is offering oblations into the fire.  As said in previous postings, yajna is one, which inspires man and society towards godliness (Daivi bhavas) (दैवी भाव्).  And there are many meanings to yajna defined in sampradaya by Rishis.  Selfless act is Yajna. Yajna performed by giving oblations in fire is called Saagnika yajna and there is another type of yajna, where no fire is needed for performance. It is done mentally, by following dharma etc.  Sadguru Sivananda Murthy garu said Every act which is done to please Isvara is Yajna.

(Idam na mama) is the word chanted in Yajna after every giving oblation.  It means ‘this is not mine’, ‘this does not belong to me’.  Whatever is offered in Yajna is not mine, not for my sake, is the essence of this mantra. Yajna is performed not only for the sake of mankind, or for a certain group of mankind. It is performed for the welfare of whole universe. Deva, Yaksha, kinnera, kimpurusha, manava, danava, animal, bird, insect, micro-organism, siddhas, visvedevas, 14 buvanas, sthula, sukshma, karana lokas, many other lokas, those residing in those lokas are benefitted by this divine act. Its main objective is to fill the universe with godly attributes, to clear or purify psychological, physical, adhytamik and environmental pollution. Irrespective of whoever performs yajna, it benefits all. This is what Sanatana dharma is.

Except for bhuloka vasas (humans), no other entities have अधिकर् (adhikar) to perform yajna karma. Yajna will happen only here. But it coordinates all the lokas. Various jivas residing in various lokas are attracted to the place where this great act is performed.  It gives them satisfaction and power and they in return give us boons. There are physical, Sacred and paaramathik (परमार्धिक्) benefits of yajna. It is said in Vedas that Yajna purifies environmental pollution, cures physiological problems, improves mental health, increases growth in plants around the area where is ‘pavitra karma’ is performed, will have positive change on behavior of animal and bio-diversity and this has been proved again and again in every research conducted on yajnas in more than last 50 years.  That is why, many countries have started special study centers in universities for research on Yajnas and those governments are allocating funds to such research. Even in adharmik countries, many social campaigns took place in support of agnihotra. (Adharmik =  Anything which is not dharma. What is said in Vedas is dharma, anything which don’t accept authority of Vedas, or which condemns it, or goes against it, or rejects is Adharma. Dharma means Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism including sikhism) and not anything else.  Hence, we can term them as adharmas = non-dharmas). There is study center in Washington D.C. by the name Universities of Agnihotra and also a Therapy center by the name 'Homatheraphy International' to popularize and conduct research on Yajnas and Agnihotra. These are some of the physical benefits of yajna.
