Every thing in Kalpa Sastra is said in the form of sutras. A sutra (IAST: sūtra सूत्र) is a Sanskrit word which refers to an aphorism or a collection of aphorisms in the form of a manual or, more broadly, a condensed manual or text. Sastra itself means collection of technical words. Hence understanding sutra sastras is difficult.

Kalpa Sutra is mainly of four types.
1. Shrauta sutras
2. Grihya sutras
3. Dharma sutras
4. Shulba sutras

In olden days, Irrespective of varnas all people following Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism), every person used to give oblations in morning and evening in Agnihotra. As the time passed, people left the tradition. As an effect of Macaulay education, now even brahmins are not performing Nityagnihotra. There are very less brahmins who are continuing this tradition. In tradition 3 types of sacred sacrificial fires are described by the ancient seers – gārhapatya (for general domestic usage), āhavaniya (for inviting and welcoming a personage or deity) and dakshinagni (for fighting against all evil).

1) SHRAUT SUTRA — These are based on the shruti, the Vedas. These contains the description of various religious rites as mentioned in the 'Brahmans' and also the various oblations performed requiring three or five sacrificial fires

2) GRIHYA SUTRA — These contain the detailed description about the various oblations performed in the household like sacred thread ceremony, marriage, 'Shraadh' etc., connected with simple offerings into the domestic fire (gārhapatya agni);

3) DHARMA SUTRA — contain the detailed description about the duties (dharmas) of all the four varnas. These have formed the chief sources of the later law-books, the Dharma Sastras.

4) SHULBA SUTRA — contain the methods of constructing the 'Altar' of the oblation which are based on the ancient geometrical science of the Hindus and which are considered to be very scientific. These Shulba sutras are the origins of geometry, arithmetic and many mathematical sciences. These sutras played a key role in development of Mathematics in later period. Even today, in this modern age, many foreigners have acknowledged the importance of these sutras in easy mathematics. Many Indians have extracted many mathematics techniques from these sutras.

Grihya sutras and  Dharma sutras are together called as the Smarta sutras, or rules based on the smrti or tradition because they have originated from smritis. Shulba-sutras are a set under the Shrauta-sutras of the Yajurveda.
